Hedda Gabler

A Co-Production with A Girl Called Stephen

Adapted by Harriet Madeley

Directed by Annie Kershaw

HEDDA HAS BUILT HERSELF THE PERFECT LIFE.
THE PROBLEM IS, SHE HATES IT.
TIME TO TAKE CONTROL.

Ah, courage. Good for you, little Thea. Makes life worth living…

Fresh from her honeymoon and crushed by the weight of a life that feels wrong, Hedda is flailing. She misses her Dad. Maybe she even misses her Mum. And she definitely shouldn’t have married this man.

Hedda devotes each day to maintaining her mask, but when ghosts of the past come knocking, it becomes harder to hide. She can’t help feeling she’s destined to destroy this life she’s created…

Annie Kershaw directs Harriet Madeley’s electrifying modern adaptation of the Ibsen classic Hedda Gabler. A version steeped in queer rage and suburban monotony, exploring how the most famous female character of all time is trapped within a life chosen for her.

On Thursday 9 March, a free post-show talk will be held after the show. The Panel will include Professor Trish Reid (Head of School of Arts and Communication Design at the University of Reading), Double Okay, Annie Kershaw (Director), Harriet Madeley (Writer), and some of the cast of Hedda Gabler.
